Johnny DeFazio beat Gypsy Joe Akron, Ohio: December 29, 1962 No wrestling Notes: My research was from the Akron Beacon and Journal, the only newspaper in that city. I usually trust my research, however, the newspaper was always messing up the wrestlers names. Paul Dowling of Maryland put out a results sheet during this period. I think someone sent him the Akron area contests. This person must have seen the shows in the area, unless they were guessing at the results ... a dangerous practice, as substitute matches often take place. I found an old letter from Dowling dated Oct 5th, 1962. He sent details of the March 31st match between Jonathan and DiPaolo. Ilio won the first fall in 5:23 with an airplane spin. Time ran out before any more falls took place, giving the match to DiPaolo. Don Leo Jonathan retained his AWA title because it didn't go the required two out of three falls. On May 5th, DiPaolo defeated Jonathan, but Jonathan retained his belt. Dowling didn't get any details of the match. Both Paul Dowling and myself put out results sheets in 1962, trading with each other. We went over matches, and when we got two different endings to the same match, I think he tried to put out correct outcomes. Research by Don Luce |
