Alaska Wrestling Territory

Brief History:

Background:

During the winter of 1955, officials brought professional wrestlers Sandor Szabo, Tom Rice, and possibly others to Anchorage for the "Anchorage Fur Rendezvous." Szabo annexed the Alaska Heavyweight championship while on this tour of Alaska.

In February of 1957, Szabo reportedly returned to Alaska and beat Lord James Blears.

Professional wrestling came to Fairbanks on Saturday, July 6, 1957 when National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight champion Lou Thesz battled Szabo to a draw at Griffin Park.  The match received tremendous publicity with a banner stating "Heavyweight Wrestling Crown Goes on Line Tonight," above the newspaper title on the front page of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.  Four days later, Doug Thomas in the same paper, wrote that "The general fan reaction was that of disappointment however, one fan summed it up thusly, 'It isn't that the match wasn't any good, I just expected much better in a title bout.' Others may consider his comment mild."
