On Tuesday, May 5, 1936, Baba beat Dick Shikat at Madison Square Garden in New York City to gain the support of the New York State Athletic Commission as World Heavyweight champion. Baba won the bout in 53:37 before 7,000 fans. He weighed 205 pounds to Shikat's 227. Baba had beaten Shikat previously, but needed to win over Shikat again in New York for local recognition. Bruce Layer, Houston Post Sports Editor, commented on Baba on Tuesday, May 26, 1936. He wrote that Baba claims the World Heavyweight Title in wrestling, but "can qualify as the world's worst singer and fiddler." On Sunday, Baba performed "on a national hook-up amateur hour," and reminded listeners that he was the titleholder "no less than 20 times." Research by Tim Hornbaker |
