Brief History:
The bitter weather conditions of Western Canada left a lasting mark on the athletes that spent time there on the booking circuit of Stewart Hart of Calgary.
Background:
Famous Wrestlers from Western Canada:
Hart, Stu:
Hart married the daughter of famed Olympian runner Harry J. Smith.
According to the March 1952 edition of the NWA Official Wrestling magazine, Hart walked five miles to an area YMCA and trained with the likes of "Johnny Demchuck, Gil Knutson, Emile Van Velzen, Pat Meehan, and the great Jack Taylor." His amateur talents turned into an Alberta welterweight title around 1930, a Dominion middleweight championship around 1937, and a light heavyweight title in 1940, "thus qualifying for a berth on the 1940 Canadian Olympic wrestling team." The Games were cancelled "on account of the war."
Hart met Joe "Toots" Mondt and, on his advice, went to New York , where he worked out with such legends as George Bothner at a city gymnasium.
Miscellaneous Notes and Milestones:
In 1951, Stu Hart reportedly bought the Calgary wrestling office for $50,000.
The offices of the Stampede wrestling office closed its doors on September 14, 1984 after selling out to the WWF.
