as if injured for several minutes, but when assisted to his feet by some of the spectators
declared no bones were broken and that he wished to continue. The referee, however,
was obdurate and awarded him the contest. The match, up to the time of its sudden and
unexpected ending, was the best and fiercest that has taken place in the city in years ..." --
Chicago Tribune, Mar. 4, 1906 ... Anderson won the second fall "by Demetral intentionally
grasping him by the legs, stating he could not win and that he preferred losing on a foul."

Duluth, MN: April 12, 1906
Joe Grimm failed to throw Martin Johnson (5 times in 60:00, only four falls) … NOTE:
Duluth sports dropped $3,000 here Tuesday night on a wrestler billed as Joe Grimm of
Ashland, but who is now said to have been Gripman Rooney of Chicago. Grimm was to
throw Martin Johnson five times in an hour, and before the match Grimm was tipped off as
a big dub.  As a result all the money offered on him was freely taken. One man lost $750.
The insiders were backing Grimm heavily and to their dismay he succeeded in throwing
Johnson only four times in an hour. Johnson says he did not know the true identity of his
opponent and the wise ones are wondering if they have been victims of the double cross. It
is a bad mix up and will hurt the wrestling game here, where it is well patronized.

game is limited and Rooney did not perform up to his standard. The bout was interesting,
nevertheless, and enthused the 5,000 spectators. Sharkey, as big as all outdoors, proved
a formidable opponent for a short handicap match." -- Chicago Tribune, Apr. 27, 1906 ...

man in the world, Frank Gotch preferred. I see McLeod says he beat me two straight falls. I
was a young kid at that time and will prove tonight that I have improved." ... Indeed, Beell
prevails with a half Nelson in 33:36 and, using a head hold, cops the second fall in 19:07

"If Leo Pardello, who styles himself the Italian catch-as-catch-can champion wrestler,
hankers for a match with Frank Gotch, the American champion, he can get it by posting a
$500 forfeit and let the forfeit go as a side bet. Gotch writes that these are the only
conditions which will drag him to Chicago. Pardello has repeatedly challenged Gotch, so
he, undoubtedly, will show the color of his money. The match, if arranged, will take place at
Brooke's Casino on Nov. 23." -- George Siler

American title laurels "in straight falls after thirty-nine minutes and forty-four seconds of the
roughest wrestling seen here since the Yousoff-Evan Lewis match at Tattersall's. It would
have taken Gotch much longer to beat the tough Italian had he not wrenched Leo's left
knee and torn loose the ligaments of the upper part of the leg with a toe and ankle hold
after thirty-nine minutes and twenty seconds' hard fighting in the first bout. It was thought
the Italian's leg had been broken, as the snap of the knee was heard by those close to the
platform. Pardello lay groaning and squirming on the mat. Several physicians crawled
through the ropes, and after a thorough examination, announced that no bones were
broken, but that he was badly injured. The bout, while there was no fall, was awarded to
Gotch, and ten minutes was given Pardello to continue. He suffered intense pain during
the resting spell, and at the end of ten minutes stated he would continue if he had to
hobble out on one leg. He answered the call of time for the second bout, but it was only a
farce as to wrestling, as he groaned in agony. Directly Gotch grasped his injured leg, and
when Frank secured a body and leg hold he permitted his opponent to pin his shoulders to
the mat without a struggle." -- George Siler, Chicago Tribune, Nov. 24, 1906

gave 50 pounds to the larger man ... Gotch won the first fall in 31:22, Beell the second in
39:00 ... "When the third fall was called it was seen Gotch was weakening. It was short and
sweet. Beell tossed Gotch over the edge of the mat, the latter striking his head on the bare
floor with a blow that rendered him unconscious. Gotch was carried out of the ring and
restoratives applied. When he returned he was apparently dazed and Beell quickly took
the winning fall. Gotch says he was not in good physical condition, having taken too many
matches in close succession ... Considerable money changed hands on the result." --
Chicago Tribune, Dec. 2, 1906

Chicago IL: December 6, 1906
