match between Yussiff Mahmout, the terrible Turk, and Frank Gotch, the world's
heavyweight champion. Unless Joe Coffey and his co-partners of the Empire Athletic Club
can raise the purse offer by B. Martinelli, the match will go to England." -- Chicago Tribune,
Jan. 15, 1909 ... The fine, manipulating hand of Jack Curley can be seen behind this ploy,
which had Martinelli, a London promoter, supposedly sending a letter to Mahmout's
manager, Antoine Pierre, and offering a 2,500-pound purse for a match with Gotch. Pierre
"immediately answered" that, as soon as Gotch posts his forfeit, he would "hurry back to
England with the Turk." ... Of course, the two would meet, not in London, but right here in
Chicago ... A day later, the pseudononymous "HEK" (Hugh E. Keough) noted in his "The
Wake of the News" column, "So, Frank Gotch and Yussiff Mahmout will settle the world's
championship at wrestling in London. 'Tis well. We would rather have it percolated through
4,000 miles of ozone than close up."

trying to promote a Frank Gotch-George Hackenschmidt bout for next November during

matters too much and who neglected to protect himself from dangerous holds" ... Martin
(Farmer) Burns, Emil Klank and M.J. (Mike) Dwyer are to serve as training partners for
Gotch here ... It is also revealed that the champion has "opened negotiations" with the

from the mat after his scheduled match with George Hackenschmidt in Australia next
January ... "Seriously speaking, I long for the day when I can watch my corn growing and
see my Poland-China swine preparing themselves for a $7.20 market at the Chicago
stockyards. I have invested my savings in Iowa farm land, and I now own more than 1,000
acres."

Chicago IL: April 6, 1909
Yussiff Mahmout works out at the Chicago A.A. gymnasium with 270-pound New York
wrestler Joe Rogers and Hjalmar Lundin, the big Swede ... Each went about a half-hour
with the Bulgarian, Rogers winding up bleeding from the mouth and Lundin winded ... "Not
satisfied with his hard work with these men Mahmout took on Fred Beell to speed him up
and for a half hour Beell thought he was being given lessons." -- Chicago Tribune, Apr. 7,
1909 ... Meanwhile, at the Illinois A.C., champion Gotch did most of his work with Martin
(Farmer) Burns ... Like Mahmout, he weighed 204, but expects to reduce a few more

biceps ... He claims Graeco-Roman victories over both Yussiff Mahmout and Raoul de

Chicago IL: April 11, 1909
Yussiff Mahmout spends Easter Sunday working out with Henry Irslinger, Hjalmar Lundin
and Joe Rogers, staying an hour and 15 minutes with the latter man ... Gotch worked to rid
himself of a bad cold ... He expects to scale in at 198 pounds.

Chicago IL: April 12, 1909
Yussiff Mahmout was forbidden further use of the Chicago A.A. gymnasium in the wake of
failing to fulfill a contract he had for an appearance the previous Saturday night ... He had
said he was sick and indisposed and it took considerable cajoling from matchmaker Joe
Coffey to get him to even come down to the C.A.A. and be introduced to the members ...
"The climax came, however, Sunday morning when some of the directors of the club
happened to go to the gymnasium and found Mahmout working. They watched him work
out for an hour and a half with three different men." -- Chicago Tribune, Apr. 13, 1909 ...

Chicago IL: April 13, 1909
Frank Gotch insists he will not wrestle Mahmout unless the Bulgarian wears shoes, which --
according to his manager, Antoine Pierre -- he has never done ... Gotch explained, "I am
not afraid that I cannot get the toe hold, shoes or no shoes. But what is the use of having
rules if they are not enforced. I want to wrestle human beings, not freaks. I always had to
abide by the rules when I invaded a foreign country, so why shouldn't insist on them now."
... Pierre said: "Mahmout will not wear shoes, no matter what Gotch or the rules say. He
never wrestled in them and never will." ... Gotch wound up a long training day with lengthy
sessions on the mat with Emil Klank and Martin (Farmer) Burns ... P.S. -- Yussiff Mahmout
would wrestle in his bare feet, but did forfeit $500 to Gotch for the privilege.

the band played "Yankee Doodle" ... "Gotch certainly was happy after the bout. He joked
and laughed with his trainers and shook hands with everybody. Hardly a word was spoken
in the Bulgarian's dressing room. A few of Mahmout's admirers talked quietly in their native
tongue, but Mahmout kept silence." -- Chicago Tribune, Apr. 15, 1909
