Dallas Wrestling Territory
Brief History:
Followers of professional wrestling during the 1980s were well aware of the power that the Von Erich name held in the state of Texas. It was a name that signified grappling excellence. Kayfabe magazines illustrated their ups and downs in vicious feuds and gave the sons of Fritz Von Erich national recognition. Fritz, whose real name was Jack Adkisson, was the heart of the Dallas territory, and led his boys to great success. His reign over the region was preceded by Ed McLemore, an equally committed and talented wrestling promoter. Combined, they held court over a major wrestling metropolis for more than four decades.
Background:
Women wrestlers Mae Young and Eva Lee opened up a wrestling promotion in Paris, Texas, to start on Tuesday, November 23, 1950 at Barrett's Skating Rink. They were going to utilize the same pool of wrestlers working out of the Morris Sigel Booking Office out of Houston, and appearing in Dallas. A short time later, reported in the December 20, 1950 edition of the Paris News, a local businessman named Thad Davidson bought the promotion from Young and Lee, and planned to start on January 9, 1951. Davidson leased the Fair Park Coliseum for his grappling programs. Young and Lee, reportedly, were going to Beaumont to promote there.
Miscellaneous Notes and Milestones:
Wrestling made its debut at the new Waco Arena on Monday, December 5, 1955 and in the main event, Rito Romero beat Gorgeous George in two-straight falls.
Obituaries:
In Dallas on February 22, 1942, wrestler Sol Slagel died in a car accident. He was 34.
Wrestler John Paul Henning (John Denton Henning) died on July 1, 2001. Henning was a well-known wrestler who settled, with his wife, in Denton, Texas around 1964.
Former college football player and professional grappler Mike Paidousis (Michael George Paidousis) passed away at 78 years old on September 9, 2002 in Mesquite, Texas.
