Jim Nance was from Indiana, Pennsylvania and attended the local high school. As an amateur wrestler at Syracuse University, he won 93 of 94 matches, and two NCAA Division I heavyweight wrestling championships. The first came in 1963, and the second came in '65. He was also a two-time NCAA Division I All-American. In May 1965, he signed with the Boston Patriots of the Junior American Football League.
