Kansas City, Missouri: January 21, 1920 (Wednesday) (Convention Hall) ... Ed (Strangler) Lewis beat Ivan Karnloff (2-0) ... John Grandovitch (as John Grandovitch, of Bohemia) vs Tommy Draak (of Belgium) … NOTE: The falls were taken in 56:29 and 16:10, respectively, each via Lewis' vaunted headlock … John Pesek is at ringside to challenge the winner … The United Press report, after the fact, spelled the foe's last name as "Karntoff." The Associated Press had it as "Karnloff." Other sources, including the San Jose CA Evening News (Lewis' home town), the Madison WI Capital Times and Reno NV Evening Gazette, had it as "Kranloff." The Atlanta GA Constitution, back on Dec. 5, 1919, in a preview of upcoming bouts, spelled it "Karnoff." Further confusing the issue (although I chose to take it as clarification) was the United Press advance story of the bout which twice spelled it "Karnloff."
