Buddy Ervin (5:08) … Wladek Zbyszko beat Sol Slagel (as Schlegel) … (promoter: Gabe Kaufman) … (referee: Walter Bates) … (announcer: Dave Stevens) Notes: The American Legion was going to present their new championship belt to the winner of the main event. Kaufman initially wanted Pesek to wrestle Ed “Strangler” Lewis and the latter was then suspended for his failure to go through with a bout. The Missouri Athletic Commission then reinstated Lewis on February 22 at a special meeting in Columbia, declaring that the “Strangler” had to meet Pesek within 60-days. Pesek had posted $1,000 for the match. With the important April 11 bout coming up, Kaufman was forced to sign someone in the top slot, and got Marshall. Al Haft, Pesek’s manager and president of the MWA, allowed Pesek to defend his world title here despite the agreement that the MWA World championship be defended only in Ohio. The American Legion, after the no decision, returned their championship belt to a safety deposit box. Long was from Burlington, Kansas, Ervin from Springfield, Illinios, Davis from Kansas City, and Santon from Kirksville, Missouri. Lewis, notably, was affiliated with “St. Louis interests,” and Kaufman believed that the promoters of that syndicate wanted to book Lewis and Jim Londos at Yankee Stadium during the summer and Lewis couldn’t risk a loss against Pesek. Pesek reportedly emerged from a two year layoff last fall. The Zbyszko result came from the wire service. It was missed by the Kansas City Star. Darna Ostopavich beat Hi Gandar (cor) … (promoter: Gabe Kaufman) … (referee: Walter Bates) … (4,000 fans) Notes: Once again, MWA President Al Haft gave Pesek special permission to defend his championship in Kansas City. Prior to this bout, a St. Louis promoter named Col. John S. Berger attempted to block the Pesek-Marshall rematch after Kaufman refused to give up the rights to the bout for it to be held in St. Louis. Berger, on Tuesday, May 10, went before the Missouri Athletic Commission in Jefferson, and claimed that Pesek ran out on a scheduled bout, and that he should be suspended. The commission didn’t agree, and allowed Kaufman to go forward with his event. The complete card results were from the Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune. The Legion had threatened to withdraw its belt unless the Midwest belt also went to the winner.” Both belts would be given to the local commission and given to the winner. “Pesek’s Midwest belt was won in March, 1931, in Columbus, O., when he defeated Joe Stecher, former world champion.” Kansas City, Missouri: Monday, May 16, 1932 (Convention Hall) … John Pesek b.
