Note:  The main event of this program was originally slated to be George Zaharias
challening World Heavyweight Champion Bronko Nagurski.  The Los Angeles Times on
January 18, 1938 reported that Nagurski was at Ravenswood Hospital suffering from an
infection, stemming from a scratch on his ankle.  Nagurski had a high fever and was
unable to wrestle, admitted to the hospital on Sunday afternoon.  The promoter instead
matched Zaharias with Ray Steele, the “noted trustbuster.” Steele was “regarded by the
wrestling fraternity as one of the strongest men the game has produced since George
Hackenschmidt’s time.” Zaharias wanted Nagurski suspended for running out on the
match until he fulfilled the match.  The Times also stated that a “late Chicago dispatch”
across the Associated Press wire said that Nagurski’s condition had improved.  The
Steele-Zaharias match, although booked and advertised, might not have occurred at all.
