New Orleans, Louisiana: March 2, 1893 (Olympic Club) ... "Strangler" Evan Lewis b. Ernest Roeber (3/5) (mixed match) (Lewis won the first fall in 7:06 in the catch style, Roeber won the G-R style match in 28:12, Lewis won the third in the catch-style in less than 30 seconds, Roeber won the fourth fall in the G-R style in 24:43, Lewis won the fifth fall in the catch style in 1:08) ... Billy McMillan b. Billy Hines (boxing) (fifth round knockout) ... (referee: Professor Duffy) ... (1,500 fans) Notes: Strangle hold was barred. The match was billed as being for the "championship of the world at mixed styles." Roeber was backed by Martin Julian and Frank Bosworth. Lewis was backed by his trainer Duncan McMillan, Dr. J.J. Davis of Chicago and Joe Choyuski. This was the opening of the Olympic Club and had seating for 6,000 people. Needless to say, the audience was a disappointment. Promoters had wanted a boxing match between Dawson and Ryan for the show, but couldn't make it happen. The wrestling match was for a $2,500 purse, reportedly "the largest ever offered for a wrestling match." Another report claimed that it was $2,000. *In November 1893, there was talk that New Orleans Olympic Club President Charles Dickson wanted to stage a match between Evan Lewis and Tom Connors with a $2,000 purse - a bout that would be for the World Title. It would be a best 3/5 falls match, catch-as-catch-can style. Dickson wanted to pay Connors, who was in England, around $200 for expenses, and was thinking about staging the match during Mardi Gras.
