(last Forum card of the year) NOTES: This research was started back in the 1960's, when I was trying to learn the history of the Montreal heavyweight championship. Earlier this year I ordered missing months to finish the year. I was using the Montreal Star. The library threw a monkey wrench at me, by not sending September 1939. Recently I ordered the Montreal Herald for June and September. The library sent me May though October 1939. The Herald for 1939 had two months on each reel. However the big feature was that the Montreal Herald gave reports for the French promotions in that city, which the Star didn’t. Because there is so much to research, I don’t plan to check January-April and November- December in the Herald for the French promotion. Many of the French promotion wrestlers are little known by me or anyone. Let’s have a little run down on some of them. Most were lighter weight wrestlers that the Forum didn’t use. ***Zelis Amhara was a black wrestler who boxed amateur around New York City from his bio. He wrestled as a face here. ***Paul Lortie and his younger brother Bob, wrestled for years, in Montreal, Europe and made a tour of the NYC area around 1951. ***Larry Raymond was billed from Detroit. He was Larry “Babe” Kasaboski, younger brother of Alex Kasaboski. Both Alex and Larry were Canadians. However the Montreal promoters billed each from the U.S. ***Mephisto (Terry Van) may be Judo Jack Terry. In 1940, Terry wrestled in California under a mask as Mephisto. I don’t have much on Larry or Terry for 1939. ***Maurice Letchford was well known in England. ***Graham Stockton also appeared in England. ***Clem and Paul Durocher were brothers, Clem the elder one. ***Jack Britton later was the boss of midget wrestling. ***Chief War Eagle was the father of Don Eagle. There were several wrestlers over the years that were called War Eagle. ***Tiger Jim Delisle also wrestled in England. ***Al Tucker wrestled in Ohio during 1951-52-53 and was billed as the manager of Edmund Francis or Roy Shire by Al Haft. The Eddie Quinn takeover from Jack Ganson was very interesting. Ganson didn’t like some of the showmanship used in 1939. However the fans of that period wanted the action of villains. It would be like trying to change what Vincent Kennedy McMahan does today. It is hard to tell if the Quinn-Ganson affair was a work to draw heat or bitter feelings between the two promoters. What ever the case, it worked. Of course Yvon Robert drew crowds in Montreal and other Quebec cities that he didn’t in the U.S. Jack Ganson, after the war promoted in Cleveland, Ohio until his death in 1957. dq=disqualification cor=count of the ring 1-1, utc=unable to continue the third fall 2-1, utc=unable to continue while wrestling in the third fall *=defending champion WTM=world’s heavyweight title match WJTM=world’s junior heavyweight title match WMTM=world’s middleweight title match Research by Don Luce February 15, 2012 *Jack Ganson instituted new rules for wrestling in Montreal, stating that matches would be staged in rounds. Promoter Eddie Quinn demanded that Williams arrive in Montreal four days prior to the match, on Saturday, to prove that would go ahead with the bout. That rule applies to boxing matches in Montreal. *Cy Williams was managed by former Montreal promoter Jack Ganson, and Yvon Robert wanted the latter barred from ringside. Ganson would need a manager’s license to go forward with that move. Williams continued to fight the local commission to be billed as the recognized World Champion and not as the challenger versus Robert. *Jack Ganson would appear before the Montreal Athletic Commission at 12:00 p.m. the day of the show to ask to be granted a managerial license to accompany Cy Williams to the ring.
