*The Friday, January 3, 1958 edition of the Montreal Star stated that Wladek Kowalski was
the World Heavyweight Champion recognized by the Montreal Athletic Commission.
Edouard Carpeniter was recognized by the National Wrestling Association as the World
Champion.

Montreal, Quebec:  Wednesday, January 8, 1958
(The Forum) … World Heavyweight Champion Wladek Kowalski and NWA World
Heavyweight Champion Edouard Carpentier wrestled to a no contest (1-1) (the referee
was knocked out, and, according to the newspaper report, “unable to officiate longer, he
called off the match.”) … Verne Gagne and Don Leo Jonathan drew … Larry Moquin b.
Bob Langevin … Paul Baillargeon b. Angelo Savoldi (14:20) … Andre Bollet and Manuel
Cortez drew … (promoter:  Eddie Quinn) … (6,500+ fans)
Notes:  Jonathan arrived in Montreal after a tour of Western Canada.  It was noted that
Quinn had moved the time of the main event of his shows from 10:00 to 9:00 p.m. sharp.
The newspaper noted:  “but the change in time whereby TV took over at 10, instead of
nine, cut in sharply on attendance … fans could stay home and see the main bout.”

Montreal, Quebec:  Wednesday, January 15, 1958
(Montreal Forum) … Gene Kiniski and Wladek Kowalski b. Verne Gagne and Pat O’

Skaaland … Bob Nandor and Angelo Savoldi drew … Billy Darnell and The Great Scott

affair) … Tarzan Zorra b. Larry Moquin … Ovila Asselin and Emil Dupre drew … Angelo
Savoldi and Arnold Skaaland drew … (promoter:  Eddie Quinn) … (referees:  Ray Belec,
Kreichman) … (7,000 fans)
Notes:  The Montreal Star (1/25/1958) reported that O’Connor was a participant in a tag
team match at the St. Nichols Arena in New York City that lead to a riot breaking out.  “As
a result, the New York State Athletic Commission has suspended wrestling there
indefinitely, so now O’Connor and his mates must look elsewhere for employment.” The
event occurred “last week,” and O’Connor was a “central figure in the fuss,” according to
the Star (1/28/1958).  New York Athletic Commissioner Julius Helfand suspended
“wrestling at St. Nick’s indefinitely.”  Incidentally, after the January 29 affair, O’Connor was
indefinitely suspended by the Montreal Athletic Commission following the main event
“when it was declared his fist had clipped the official.” That suspension would keep him out
of the rematch the following week.
