(2,000 fans) Notes: The match was still going when the New York Times went to press on January 27, 1881, and it was 1:00 in the morning - without a fall being scored. The match was for the "championship medal," which Muldoon held and Whistler staked $100 against it. The Times stated that because Muldoon was a police office, he was "prohibited from wrestling for money stakes in the ordinary way." Muldoon weighed 198 and Whistler 172. McClellan was a boxer. It was decided before the match started that the bout would not end in a draw decision. Research by Tim Hornbaker February 10, 2011 |
