Manhattan, New York: July 25, 1892 (Academy of Music) ... Ernest Roeber b. Apollon to capture the World Wrestling Title (2/3) (Apollon won the first fall, but Roeber took the second and then the third when his opponent left the stage, refusing to continue) (Roeber was awarded the match by the referee) ... (referee: O'Donnell) Notes: Going into the match, Roeber was said to be the American champion, having succeeded William Muldoon when the latter retired. With the win, Roeber was awarded the title, $1,000 stakes, and 75 per cent of the gate. Roeber weighed 180 pounds to his opponent's 250. The Brooklyn Eagle stated that much of Apollon's weight was "fat." He gave up the third fall two minutes into the match. Muldoon accompanied Roeber to the ring and Maurice Kaufmann accompanied Apollon. It wasn't clear whether this was for the Graeco-Roman or catch-as-catch-can championship, although it seems as if it was for the former championship. Research by Tim Hornbaker February 10, 2011 |
