In this research I found cards that the New York Times Index missed.
The newspapers make it impossible to spell names right. Martin Merkur and Mack
Tkahoff had a lot of different spellings. I’m not sure which was correct.
The correct spelling for Abe Coleman was really Colman. Dick Shikat was spelled Schikat.
I spell them Coleman and Shikat because that’s the way they became.
On the March 19th card at the Garden, promoter Jack Curley billed Hans Steinke as the
World’s champion. Future cards usually billed him as New York’s chief contender to title
honors.

*On Monday, February 20, 1928, Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeated Joe Stecher in St. Louis
to capture the World Heavyweight Title. New York promoter Jack Curley attended the
program. The next day, the New York State Athletic Commission announced its ruling
that it would not recognize Lewis as the World’s titleholder. The commission stated that
Hans Steinke had a better position to claim the championship and that the “Strangler”
would not be recognized as the titleholder until he beat Steinke.

*According to a few sources, Hans Steinke was recognized as the World Heavyweight
Champion in New York State. Others state that he was just the logical contender.
