was on a “Mexican trip with a touring carnival” wrestling all comers when he was stabbed
by the brother of a man he pinned.  Myers reportedly needed 167 stitches and was out of
action for six months.  The man who stabbed him was fined one hundred pesos, which
was “about four bucks American.” The newspaper stated that Myers won the World Junior

company he was touring with when he was stabbed, but doesn’t go to “old Mexico”
anymore.

about every one of the 2,780 customers to be spittin’ mad at him.  And that’s just what
the king of rassling showmen is supposed to do.” O’Connor had Schmidt pinned in the
third fall, but the referee was knocked out.  The referee revived to count Schmidt’s pin.

The newspaper stated that the Schmidt-Kowalski main event was one of the shortest
main events in Omaha history, lasting 20:08 total time.  The crowd was disappointed in
the main event because there was plenty of slugging and kicking.  Schmidt was the villain
in the bout and he was “usually the master showman,” but he “failed to save the poor
show.”

Max Clayton) … (referees:  Joe Krejci, Louie Longo) … (4,487 fans)
Notes:  Gagne was putting his “newly-earned United States heavyweight rassling
championship” on the line against Kowalski.  World Tag Team champions Billy Darnell
and Bill Melby were supposed to appear, but Melby pulled out and was replaced by
Sonny Myers.  The Omaha World Herald reported that “Gagne will explain his mysterious
United States title by staying ‘its something to stir up interest in rassling.’” The report
continued, “Lou Thesz, recognized as the world’s champion, takes his title outside the
United States too often, so a new division was started.”

*Robert Phipps of the Omaha World Herald wrote, in the October 5, 1953, newspaper:  “If
Gagne U.S. Mat Champ, Thesz Must Be an ‘Alien.’ How can Gagne be U.S. rassling
champion when Thesz, who also lives in the country, is the world champion?  Mat fans
puzzled.  Is precedent for this.  Gotch was world champion and Americus was American
titleholder.” Phipps’ column was called, “Speaking of Sports.”

*In the Omaha World Herald (10/19/1953), Ronald Nelson of Omaha had his comments
printed.  He said that Jack Brickhouse misinformed wrestling viewers that Verne Gagne
was an Olympic champion.  Nelson stated that Gagne was “never” an Olympic champion
“or even the American representative in the games of 1948.” Gagne was “only on the
team as an alternate to Detective Henry Wittenberg from New York, who was the
American representative and Olympic champion.”

and was making his return.  TeSelle was from Covington, Kentucky.

Roberre drew (15:00) … (promoter:  Max Clayton) … (2,761 fans)
Notes:  The Omaha World Herald (10/20/1953) reported that:  “In the dressing room,
[Hans] Schmidt denied newspaper reports from Chicago that his real name is Guy
LaRose and that he was born in Joliet, Que., Canada.  Schmidt pointed out the name
‘Guy LaRose’ is a hybrid of his 3-year-old son’s given name of ‘Guy’ and his wife’s
maiden name of ‘LaRose.’ After a hearing of the Illinois Athletic Commission, Schmidt was
reported as testifying he was not a German citizen and never said he was.  Hans denied
this, saying he came from Germany – but doesn’t want to go back.” Illinois State Athletic
Commission officials blamed promoters for causing the discrepancy in Schmidt’s name.

Ben and Mike Sharpe added the world’s tag team rassling championship to their Pacific
coast crown.” They won the title from Bill Melby and Billy Darnell in Chicago.  Sharpes
won the crown on a “fluke” when Darnell was injured and unable to continue.  The loss of
a tag team partner in a tag team match, according to the Illinois Athletic Commission,
results in the forfeiture of the bout.
