In 1936, Paul Jones ran for the position of sheriff in Houston, Texas. According to the May 24, 1936 edition of the Houston Post, he was not dropping out of the race as some rumors had said. He noted that: "Ive been wrestling for 15 years and I don't have to think up publicity schemes now. I'm through wrestling until after the election and perhaps for good. Fifteen years in the ring is a long time and I have been thinking of retiring for the past couple of years." He added, "Regardless of the outcome [of the race], I may never return to the ring." Earlier in the month (5/7/36), Houston promoter Morris Sigel had to deny that he was supporting Jones for sheriff. Sigel said that he was friends with all the candidates in the race.
