and has been ruled off the mat for life in this state.” No show next week due to the 6-day

*A report in the Wednesday, January 20, 1937 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle
stated that $4,000 was spent from the boxers and wrestlers benefit fund of Northern
California “in the last few months” to help wrestler Sammy Stein (trachoma), Sacramento
wrestler Cliff Chambers (infection) and boxer Speedy Urita.  Stein’s case needed $1,300,
whicl Chambers needed $1,400.  Bill Longson was another situation that the newspaper
mentioned and Harry B. Smith, sports editor, wrote that he was expected to be out of
wrestling for a year and in a plaster cast for two months.  There was talk of a benefit show
for Longson and Chambers, and Joe Malcewicz wanted Man Mountain Dean to headline.

*In Will Connolly’s column on Tuesday, January 19, 1937 in the San Francisco Chronicle,
he reprinted comments from Alan Ward of the Oakland Tribune regarding Man Mountain
Dean’s flying broad jump.  Ward expressed the opinion that the maneuver should be
banned by the California Athletic Commission, and mentioned that Dean “put a young
athlete named Bill Longson, father of two children, one an infant in arms, in Atla Bates
Hospital in Berkeley, paralyzed from the waist down.  Longson will never wrestle again.  He
may never walk again.  He has a broken back.  He is encased in a cast from his armpits to
his toes and is plagued with the terrifying numbness that comes of a pinched spinal cord.”
Ward mentioned that the “crowd roared” when Dean smalled down onto Longson’s
stomach, and called the move a “cowardly stunt.”  He wrote “there is not a professional
heavyweight wrestler in California so untalented but that he could not throw Dean without
breaking a sweat,” and that Dean was unpopular with his fellow grapplers.

Chief Inspector Donn Shields.  A photo of Shields presenting the “California Wrestling
championship” belt to Szabo, with Malcewicz appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle.
“Szabo won the abdominal decoration from Billy Hansen in an Oakland bout,” the paper
said.  Dean was called a “former Presidio soldier.” The State Athletic Commission upheld
Dean’s broad jump ban.  Dean claimed that his box official appeal was his whiskers.  It was
said that “Hansen can arch his back and push his head, like a crab, over the 100 yard
course in 22 seconds.” Nelson Davis was called the “brother of Wee Willie Davis, well
known problem child of wrestling.  Wee Willie, to his credit, is home in Virginia attending his
ailing father, but brother Nelson promises to maintain the family’s bad reputation.”

*Photos of a bout between “Mrs. Billy Wolfe (the brunette) of Kansas City and Miss Clara
Mortensen from Glendale, Cal.,” appeared in the Tuesday, February 9, 1937 edition of the
San Francisco Chronicle.  The match occurred in Atlanta, and was won by Mrs. Wolfe, who
was Mildred Burke, by disqualification.

therefore, will be the last appearance of girl wrestlers in this neighborhood.” Reportedly,
the commission was angry that the women grapplers dumped a booking in Fortuna tonight

California.  The decision was made by Commissioners George Payne and Edwin Geary.
They also announced that the commission was recognizing Joe Parelli as the “175 pound
wrestling champion of the world.” Pat Fraley also appeared before the commissioners,
trying to convince them to give him a title shot against Bronko Nagurski, who he claims was
ducking him.

George Sauer.” Gino Garibaldi attempted to tell the crowd why he should be wrestling
Nagurski for the championship, but his microphone was turned off.  The ring “rope” was
broken during the Garibaldi-Yourist match, which delayed the main event.  While Nagurski
and Fraley waited in the ring for the rope to be fixed, several fans began to brawl around
the ringside area, which was said to distract Nagurski.  Will Connolly of the San Francisco
Chronicle stated that “Bronko’s exhibition was spiritless and unworthy of a champion, but,
as I say, the young fellow was unnerved by the rudeness of the amateur boxers, who
crabbed his act.” Connolly also said that “Don McDonald of Los Angeles referred the
match to protect the champion from any untoward happening.”

Notes:  There was a lot of publicity building up toward the Nagurski-Garibaldi match.
Nagurski initially said he wouldn’t wrestle Garibaldi.  The San Francisco Chronicle stated
that if Garibaldi beat Nagurski, he’d become the first Italian “mat king.” In the August 31
edition of the paper, there was a photo of Gariabldi holding up an Italian newspaper with a
large headline promoting his bout with Nagurski.  A “capacity” crowd was expected going
into the bout.  Joe Cox was reportedly the only wrestler to pin Nagurski’s shoulders to the

Nebraska.  Wagner, only recently retired from an active career on the mat, has been
rehearsing in a gym he set up in the basement of his home to prove that if the cops ever
allowed a referee to get at a rassler, the official would throw the journeyman in jigtime.”
