San Antonio Wrestling Territory

Brief History:

Background:

As of 1973, there was an overload of wrestling promotions in San Antonio, with the Frank Brown-Dorathy Livengood Brown faction still holding an advantage over their rivals.  Besides the established group, there were three other active wrestling licenses in the city, reportedly the most for a single town in the entire country.  While Brown was running at the Municipal Auditorium with name grapplers, other promotions were operating at local halls and theaters.  One of the minor league promotions was the Alamo Wrestling Association, run by Lupe Mendiola and Oscar Narvaez.  The Alamo Wrestling Association had been holding shows at the VFW Hall and Ma-Lu Recreation Center since around 1968, and featured many non-heavyweight Mexican grapplers.  In 1971, they touted an appearance by the legendary El Santo.  Among the other wrestlers this troupe used was Armando and Hector Garza, Johnny Trigo, Angel Azvi, El Costeno, Balde Gonzales, and Pantera Negra.
