Hutchinson KS News-Herald: June 15, 1946 (Saturday)
(excerpt from column of Sylvia Sage, who attempts to dispense answers to "any problem
of general interest") ... DEAR MISS SAGE: Can you  tell me which Is the champion
heavyweight wrestler of the world, Orville Brown or Bill Longson? If Orville Brown is not,
why do the posters advertise him as 'World's Heavyweight Champion'? --MERNA.

"ANSWER -- Wrestling champions are not determined as prize flghters are. The country
is divided roughly into circles or territories. In each territory the title of champion Is more
or less arbitrarily placed on one man something in the same manner that a certain
newspaper will dub itself the world's greatest newspaper. The champion of each territory
rather religiously guards himself against being matched against the 'champion' of any
other territory. In that way his claim to the title remains safe. At one time and another
there have been as many as 12 or 15 so-called 'world champion' wrestlers."
