*On Saturday, February 2, 1935, members of the Missouri State Athletic Commission met
at the Hotel Statler in St. Louis rejected Ed “Strangler” Lewis’s plea to reverse the decision
of the latter’s bout with Jim Londos last Thursday.  He also asked for a return match, which
was also denied.  In attendance for the meeting were Lewis, Londos, referee Ted
Tonneman, Tom Packs, Acting Chairman Garrett L. Smalley of Kansas City, and other
officials.  The commission proceeded to ban use of the “unconscious hold” that Londos
frequently used because it was too similar to the stranglehold.

Notes:  The newspaper claimed Lewis was the “underdog” in match with Browning.  Lewis
called “ancient,” and this was said to be an upset.  Fans booed through the Kampfer-
Steele match and Damon Kerby of the St. Louis Post Dispatch indicated a level of sarcasm
when he wrote, “They apparently could not enter into the spirit of t occasion.  Spectators
booed throughout their affair.  But they were both in their (sic) trying.  Of course they
were.”

Notes:  It was said that Georgia Governor Eugene Talmadge was a big Man Mountain
Dean supporter.  During the main event, Sonnenberg's flying tackle caused him to butt
head with the referee, knocking them both down.  O'Mahoney then pinned Sonnenberg as
Rentrop recovered.  Sonnenberg reportedly cancelled a match in Detroit because of
injuries sustained in this bout.

Notes:  There was an advance sale of $5,000 and 12,000 fans were expected for the
show.  According to the rules, Levinsky was "permitted to employ any tactics he may see
fit, including wrestling and punching while on the mat.  Steele, however, will be forbidden to
punch, kick, gouge, etc., as has been customary for wrestlers to do of late," according to
the St. Louis Globe-Democrat (11/19/35).  Both posted $1,000 forfeits.  Helsner was the
referee for the main event.  That same paper said it took Steele "just 35 seconds to bring
to a conclusive end the exciting mixed match." It was a ten round bout.  Steele won when
Levinsky was given a 10-count with his shoulders on the mat.  The newspaper stated that
the mat was "packed with exchitement." Hanson was from Boston.
