Henry Sutor b. Mike O'Grady (18:40) ... (matchmaker: Joe Coffey) ... (sponsored by: Empire Athletic Club) ... (4,000 fans) Notes: The Cutler-Roller match was not billed as being for the American Title, which Cutler had claimed after beating Henry Ordemann in early February at Minneapolis. In fact, that match was the semifinal on this show. Sutor was said to be the Welterweight Champion and was from Cleveland. More on the Roller-Cutler match, the Des Moines News (3/26/11) reported that Cutler regained "mat honors" from Roller when he beat the physician in Buffalo on March 25. That seems to indicate that Roller captured Cutler's American claim here, only to lose it back in Buffalo. Chicago, Illinois: Thursday, March 16, 1911 ( ) … World Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch b. Henry Bahn (Samson) when the latter was unable to continue (Bahn was thrown to the mat, landing on his head, and was knocked unconscious. Early speculation was that he had suffered a skull fracture and was taken to a local hospital) … World Middleweight Champion Walter Willoughby b. William Monson (2-0) *Chicago Acting Police Chief Schuettler was in attendance, and after Bahn’s injury, ordered Gotch to remain on the premice pending an examination of the falled grappler. Schuettler released Gotch soon thereafter. *Gotch ordered his manager Emil Klank to tend to Henry Bahn following the injury, and payed for the latter’s medical bills. Chicago, Illinois: April 24, 1911 ( ) ... Dr. Roller b. William Demetral (2-0) *Promoters and managers wrangled over the specifics for the big Frank Gotch-George Hackenschmidt World Heavyweight Title match throughout the month of August 1911. Emil Klank, the manager of Gotch, had to post a guarantee of $21,000 prior to the bout. *On August 15, 1911 in Baltimore, Americus “closed a contract today to work out Hackenschmidt for his match with Gotch.” *George Hackenschmidt arrived in the United States from Southampton, England on Wednesday, August 16, 1911 on the Olympic. With him was his senior training partner Dr. B.F. Roller and Herman Koch. The trio, joined by Americus in New York, boarded a train for Chicago. Once in the “Windy City,” Hackenschmidt set up headquarters at the Empire Club in the Sherman Hotel. A fourth training partner, Adolph Ernst, would also take part in preparing Hackenschmidt for the big match. *Frank Gotch trained in Humboldt, Iowa at Riverside Park with Farmer Burns, Emil Klank, Jess Reimer (Jess Westergaard), Yussif Hussane, Joe Rogers and James Asbell. *As late as Wednesday, August 23, 1911, Adolph Ernst was a member of Hackenschmidt’s training team. It has been rumored in later years that Ernst was paid to specifically injure the “Russian Lion” during training, to give Frank Gotch the edge. It seems that Ernst was indeed released from the training squad prior to the big championship match, as he was dismissed from training releases to the newspaper and not present for photographs.
