Chicago, Illinois: Friday, December 3, 1920 (Haymarket Theater) ... William Demetral and Jack Linow wrestled to a draw ... (referee: Johnny Meyers) Notes: Date dispute. May have been December 4. The referee stopped the match at midnight and declared a draw. Demetral had the only fall and Linow was in charge when the match was called. Fans protested, inciting a riot that was only quelled by police. Parts of the theater were torn up, including the scenery and footlights. Fans were angered because the match had been advertised as a finish bout. Reportedly, members of a burlesque troupe performing at the theater barricaded themselves in their dressing rooms to hide from the mob. Research by Tim Hornbaker October 21, 2010 |
