He is the nephew of Rey Misterio Sr.  Misterio made his pro debut in 1991.  Wrestled
throughout Mexico, Calfornia and Texas before turning up in Extreme Championship
Wrestling in 1995.  He beat Psicosis on September 16, 1995 in Philadelphia.  A rematch for
two-of-three-falls was scheduled for October 7th.  Misterio and Psicosis wrestled it out and
the result changed.  Psicosis won the second bout.

On March 9, 1996, Misterio wrestled Juventud Guerrera for ECW in Philadelphia in a two-of-
three-falls match.  Lost the initial round by pin, but recovered enough to take the second.
Misterio won the final after nearly sixteen minutes by pinfall.  The matches of the lucha libra
style in Philly received nationwide attention and the internet reporters could not say enough
about them.

Misterio, Guerrera and several others joined Eddy Guerrero and Konnan in World
Championship Wrestling.  The quickness and skill of the named athletes wowed American
fans on a national level.  Soon after his debut, Misterio was making a run at the World
Cruiserweight Title being held by Dean Malenko.  On July 8th in Orlando during Monday
Nitro, Misterio won the belt.  A first of five reigns.  Misterio beat Mr. JL on August 26, 1996 by
pinfall.  He lost the belt back to Malenko on October 27th during Halloween Havoc in Nevada.
Misterio took his second Cruiserweight Title from Eddy Guerrero on October 26, 1997 in Las
Vegas.  He had put his mask up versus the title and afterwards, he still remained
unidentified.  During Nitro on November 10th, Guerrero won back the title in Memphis.

In January 1998, he won the belt from Juventud Guerrera.  Before the end of the month,
Misterio dropped the title to Chris Jericho.  Misterio teamed with Konnan against The
Outsiders, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, on February 21, 1999 at the Oakland-Alameda County
Coliseum in Oakland, California.  The tag affair would be Misterio’s mask vs. Elizabeth’s hair.
In the past, he had overcome odds to remain hooded.  That Sunday, Nash pinned Misterio
and unmasked him.  The Outsider even donned the mask himself as a spoof.  Misterio’s
popularity didn’t waiver a bit.  He seemed to become stronger from the loss.

On March 15th in Cincinnati, Misterio beat Billy Kidman for his fourth World Crusierweight
Title during Nitro.  On the 29th, he teamed with Kidman to capture the WCW World Tag Team
Title from Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko.  Rey Jr. was a double World Champion.  Psicosis
won a four-way Cruiserweight Title match on April 19th in Gainesville, but a week later,
Misterio regained it on Nitro.  Misterio and Kidman lost the World Tag Title on May 9th in St.
Louis to Perry Saturn and Raven before a large crowd during the Slamboree pay-per-view.
He would retain the Cruiserweight Title through most of the summer.  Lenny Lane upset him
on August 19th in Lubbock.  In 1999, the Filthy Animals were formed with Konnan and Billy
Kidman.  On October 18th in Philadelphia, he teamed with Konnan to win the World Tag
Title.  Misterio suffered a serious leg injury and WCW Officials were forced to strip them of
the belts.

The New Blood was formed in 2000, but the Filthy Animals remained together.  In August,
Juventud Guerrera and Misterio teamed to win the World Tag Title in Kelowna, British
Columbia during a Nitro broadcast.  The championship was declared vacant on September
18th after the Disco Inferno put the belts up against the organization’s commissioner post,
which was held by Ernest Miller.  Guerrera and Misterio Jr. lost the match and the belts were
stripped away.  He beat Guerrera on September 26, 2000 at a Thunder Taping in Wilkes-
Barre when the referee stopped the match due to Guerrera’s knee injury.  He returned to
Mexico in October 2000, but remained on the WCW Staff.

In early 2001, he participated in the initial WCW World Cruiserweight Tag Team Title
Tournament, but were overcome in the finals.  Misterio and Billy Kidman won the belts on the
final edition of Monday Nitro on March 26, 2001 in Panama City Beach.  WCW was
purchased by the World Wrestling Federation.  When wrestlers from WCW joined the WWF
during the summer and the invasion began, Misterio was surprisingly absent.

Rey Jr. has been a vital part of wrestling in the United States since 1995.  His matches often
received four or five stars and many wished they had seen more of him.  In Japan, Jushin
Liger is known as a junior heavyweight legend.  In the United States…the man is Rey Misterio
Jr.
